Sisters

These pieces, originally worn in the A Night in the Chapel showcase, were later installed as a dual sculpture in The Mall. Originally used as skirts, the sister pieces were then suspended in the air using fishing line and anchored down by trainyard hardware. The lower sister is created from weaving coiled factory-grade doll hair encased in plastic tubing into an armature of welded steel. The top sister is made by crocheting straightened doll hair.

Doll hair informed the tactical and conceptual creation of my senior thesis. I sourced this material from a foreclosed fibers factory that specialized in toy-making. Working with it in its many forms led me to understand the ability of being both hard and soft. It encompassed a lot of what I was trying to explore through creating this collection, and if I can get my hands on it again, it would be a privilege to work with.

Opener

Opener, originally worn in the A Night in the Chapel showcase, was later installed as a stagnant sculpture in The Mall on a plastic mannequin. The mannequin stands on a wooden platform protruding from the wall. Its composition consists of a woven loin cloth made of ribbon and coiled factory-grade doll hair encased in plastic tubing, a boned corset made of tweed with metallically glazed ceramic ornamentation, and a necklace made from a found piece of train yard hardware. The model who wore this piece carried Gaga Bag.

Maria

Precious

Precious, originally worn in the A Night in the Chapel showcase, was later installed as a hanging sculpture in The Mall. This piece exemplifies the dual nature of many of my works in that it can be worn as a garment or installed as a stagnant art piece. This piece in its final, tension-based installation consists of three components. At the top is a suspended crocheted nylon cross, in the middle hangs Jessica’s amputated arm, and hanging at the bottom is a component made of crocheted nylon and individually adhered ceramic flakes.

In its debut, Precious, titled after both the nature of its composition as well as the first name of the model who wore it in A Night In The Chapel, was intended to create an unavoidable cacophony. Precious symbolizes the act of abstracting my current religious beliefs from the Italian Catholic culture that I was raised within. In A Night In The Chapel, the cross component was worn on the chest, attached with tightly bound straps, and the nylon and ceramic piece was tied around the waist and worn as a skirt. During this moment of the performance, the chapel was quiet except for the clatter amplified by the model's strut. Following my creative direction, the model wearing Precious was meant to visibly and audibly disrupt the classical charade of Catholicism embodied by my depiction of Mother Maria which preceded her. Along with the garment’s kinetic soundtrack, the model’s careless, mockery-based interactions with Jessica in this moment of the showcase further visualized the abolition and appropriation I applied to my previous religious culture.
